Urban Villa Kerkstraat – spacious loft apartment – Amsterdam
In Amsterdams art district known as the ‘Spiegel’ area, Standard Studio designed a spacious and playful loft apartment for a young family of three. Located in the Kerkstraat, the apartment has big windows facing the street. By raising the floor level 1.5 meters there is still a lot of privacy and you can enjoy the view across the street.
The spacious loft apartment consists out of one big photo studio with some adjacent spaces and another space that is located towards the street. Before, these were not visually connected, they were separated by a big load bearing wall. By opening up a big load bearing wall between the living room and the studio both spaces become one. Where the big wall separated the two spaces and blocked light the wall now is an impressive opening that frames the view at both sides.
If there are doors they are mostly hidden if they are not needed to close off a space so the sense of ‘openness’ is as big as possible. The apartment is fitted with a split level so when you are in the living room you are 2m above street level. This provides a lot of privacy towards the busy street, it almost feels as if you are floating above street level.
